[PAST EVENT] Chess Lesson and Free Play

Today, we covered tactical puzzles around “forking” which is the idea of attacking two pieces at the same time.

Always look for forcing moves such as checks and see if you can check the king while attacking your opponent’s piece. If you can do this, the king has to defend or move and after that you can capture the piece.

We ended the session with free play where it was great to see castling happen, pieces being developed and we even witnessed some forks, helping win material. We saw some players flag on time, so that is another aspect to be kept in mind while playing games which is keeping track of time. Sometimes, you don’t need to find the perfect move, a reasonable and “safe” move will work fine when you are low on time.
